@D Kompres any examples of disadvantages? With their many intelligent limbs, and I mean absolutely no disrespect to Hinduism, which is a rich and beautiful faith, on seeing octopussys, I keep thinking of the goddess Shiva, who stands in many Hindu homes as a blessing and protection, with Her multiple arms. We once had a Hindu friend, who's passed on, who gave my parents this figurine when we moved into our new home. We are not Hindu but it always stood in the display shelf of our new wall unit. I loved wall units (yeah I was a '70s kid) and I regularly dusted and polished Shiva as I thought she was pretty. Over the years she got moved and lost. Back to 🐙, I wonder if they are smarter than wales and dolphins?

When God had made all the creatures of the world they all gathered for a picnic and as the octopus struggled and slid towards the others they mocked him "bleheh, shun the spineless freak!" When the sad, lonely octopus finally reached the picnic he then had no other choice but to watch as the others played in the fields, sang beautiful songs all while they simply scoffed at the the poor boy's lack of skeletal structure and as the the day came to a close everyone took part in a wheelbarrow race but with nothing to hold onto the lonely octopus had not come, instead holding a solitary visual at the starting line. He did not succeed in this race, gaining nothing but shame, jealousy for bones and a partipation badge.

This is absolutely fantastic. Octopuses have become my new favorite creature, after watching that My Octopus Teacher film. It is so comforting to learn about intelligent life so distant from us. It makes me worry less about the possibly inevitable extinction of humankind. Intelligent life will evolve again, and likely surpass what we could do in many ways. I mean... having the entire body as a brain, and instantly changing skin properties is just nuts. This era now of so many octopus subspecies makes me think of when there were many different subspecies of homo. The species variety would hopefully mean that octopuses could outlive massive climate change (or at least some of them) and get to continue evolving and changing. Truly fantastic to think about the inevitability of it all, of rising complexity.

They have like powers what if they created sharks and other sea creatures because they were lands enemy. N they were defeated so they started inventing creating sharks to evolve to go on human land. But along the way the creatures became friendly like dolphins. So they started again but the next weapon they made were crabs and lobsters

One word: tentacles. The capacity of tentacles to manipulate the environment, move in complex ways, and process enormous amounts of sensory information means that intelligent control of the tentacles is highly valuable, evolutionarily speaking. High intelligence wouldn't be nearly as useful to a fish with its simple fins, so it's less likely to evolve in fish. But an octopus can truly make use of intelligence -- to control tentacles that are the equivalent of eight morphing robotic arms full of suckers and sensors. Its high intelligence no doubt also made complex tentacles more valuable in turn, so the tentacles would've become increasingly complex as well. This more than made up for the lack of a social-based need for intelligence in octopi. Primate "hands" probably were similarly conducive to brain development in primates.

If the octopus intelligence developed due to the need to survive, it must have done so as spontaneously as it can change colors, because they would have been wiped out by predators long before such genetic mutations could take place according to mainstream evolutionary science. Anyone have any better ideas 💡 ???🤔

What limits the cognitive behavior of octopus is their short lifespan of only 2 years. They live to reproduce once and that's it. While this strategy is great for many reasons it does limit what an Octopus can do with their intelligence which I suspect means they probably have stayed on a similar level of intelligence for millions of years. While they are inteligent they have no way of gaining life experience which we call wisdom or transferring said wisdom to others of their species unlike Birds and Mammals who are able to do so quite easily. It's ironic how such an Intelligent animal is trapped in a cognitive dead end because of their methods of reproduction. Had their been an Octopus species who could reproduce multiple times on their lifespan I bet this planet could be dominated by them. Instead us newcomers study them in labs.

I don't understand how anyone could believe that creatures like this just randomly formed over extremely long periods of time?! It's obvious that the octopus would not survive if you changed anything about it, so how could it live long enough to "evolve" anything. The idea that all the life on earth stems from a random chemical event is ridiculous and has no basis in actual science.

This could be really convincing with the 'evolution' thing. Then i studied DNA and how complex it is. And for ALL of this to just happen by NATURE is literally impossible. Scientists today cannot even do half of what evolution claims to have happen by nature. As comparison, evolution is like a tornado going through a pile of garbage and out comes a fully functional water-cooled gaming computer with neon lights. Creation makes more sense and has no flaws in it. :/ evolution has many. Even in something has ONE flaw it cannot be.

Their complex eye also evolved independently = with a better design than vertebrates. Ours evolved with the photoreceptor cell behind the neurons that carries info (via the optic nerve) to the brain. So, our vision is partially blocked by those "strings" of neurons. It is the cause for the evolution of the Tapetum lucidum in nocturnal animals. It is a reflective surface behind the photoreceptor cells that reflects "wasted" light back out the eye - giving the cells a 2nd shot at soaking up the light they missed on the first pass. Now, to the octopus... Their eyes are better than vertebrates because the photoreceptor cells are in FRONT of the neurons; so those cells are not partially blocked by nerve bundles (like a vertebrate eye). Convergent evolution is awesome, and a powerful piece of evidence.

@Teds HoldOver Tks, was interesting. I think bees and hummingbirds see in color. A hummingbird's eye is tiny as well as a bee's. Anyway, we see with our brains not our eyes. As an example, my wife was supposed to have taken one of our vehicles to visit our daughter about 30 miles away. Thinking she was gone when I went outside I did not see the vehicle she was supposed to be travelling in even tho it was sitting right there. This has amazed me.

    2. Teds HoldOver
      Teds HoldOver
      2 päivää sitten

@John Lee Your eye has Color sensitive cells and low light sensitive cells. Humans are active during the day, in high light, so color cells makes sense for us. Most nocturnal animals (dogs and cats for example) do not see color. This is because color sensitive cells are worthless in low light (think: can you see color in low light?). And color cells take up “real estate” on the retina. So, an animal that sees in color sacrifices night vision. If you lived in a cave and had many nocturnal predators (and prey) you would gladly sacrifice color for low light vision). Humans have a habit of thinking we are the “top” of the evolutionary tree. If you were an octopus you would think we are far from a good design. 😁 To the point: I didn’t say that the octopus eye is all-sound the BEST design. Only that their eye evolution resulted in a fundamentally better design plan. Evolution isn’t “perfect”. It works with what it has. Book recommendation: “The selfish gene” or “the blind watchmaker”.

I used to have a tiny 1 inch wide Horseshoe crab. I would interact with him, I put my reading chair next to the tank so he wouldn't be lonely.. I noticed, after eating, he used to play a game, where.. because it was a 4 foot tall 1 foot wide tank, and i had the intake that made bubbles at the bottom corner,.. the little cutie learned, he could walk over, put his shell over the bubbler, it woukd lift him up all four feet (he is only 1 inch!) then at the very top, he could aim, and swim all the way down the water column, and he would do spirals, sometimes straight down. Sometimes he would do a SPIN letting his feet go to the sky and around... I am older now and I feel great shame, that it did not occur to me as a young, dumb, self centered 21 year old,... _to get him companions._ I had him as a favor to a friend who could not have a tank anymore. But I tell myself, at least he knew he was not alone and I would cheer on when he did his trick,. I just kniw he could 'hear' my voice vibrations, I would yell something like 'Yay, that's a good one Allright!' or 'LOOK AT YOU GO!' and immediately, he would spin or do something to... respond. I sensed intelligence, and Play and personality in that tiny creature, as surely as Lucy my Dog or Linus, Violet, Marble and Buddy my cats. We are all something so much more,. than merely this..,, Projecting, or CLOUD STREAMING, from some more fundamental dimension of reality.

@Dark Souls Fanboy Again, every living thing is proof that God exists. Not really interested in debating the truth. I pray that you come to know God for yourself and that the lies of evolution are made known to you. You were created for more, all the best.

@Andrew Burton its funny how you disregard all of what i said. these would be good news and id love there to be a creator but the facts dont speak for him, come back to me when youre willing to have a actual discussion on this

Love how Maynard J. Kennan chooses the Octopus 4 his album's art. Love how they r so alien like more then any in the sea. Most of all I love how the Octopus in Sea World hella timed security checks in order 2 sneak into the nextdoor aquarium n eat the hell outta all the fish nextdoor, never getting caught till workers checked security cameras. Check it out

Even if they do evolve into something greater or come as aliens all it would take is four teenage mutant ninja turtles 🐢
