Just when you thought Sia couldn’t get any worse.... When an autistic person REACHED out to her on twitter & wrote “ myself & several other actors w/ autism offered to work on the movie, even with short notice” SHE FUCKING RESPONDS “MAYBE YOURE JUST A BAD ACTOR” I screamed SO loud I scared my Grandma. She told me there was NO reason to get loud in her house...I then explained what happened .... She then joined me in a great big loud “GAAAAAH!!!! what the actual fuck!”

Do not use restraints on anyone. (Unless absolutely necessary) It's common sense. If someone is having a breakdown do not touch them without their permission especially an Autistic person, the reason they have a mental breakdown is that their senses are going haywire and there are too many things going on. Speak in a quiet manner (They are most likely going to have major sensitivity so please get everyone to shut up) and comfort them try to help them calm down. (At least this is what works with my brother) Autistic people react in different ways that's why there is no 'One size fits all' when referring to autism. For example, my brother will express it in major rage or sadness, while my friend on the other hand will try to get into a space and panic (they would hide under the table and cry/panic) Don't treat autistic people as aliens, they are just as capable as you. We all have rough times in life, autistic people may have these harder and/or more frequent but that doesn't make them weak. Everyone needs help, yes even you Chad Please if you have any more helpful tips please comment them, we need to learn as much as we can to make people feel more welcome.

Just want to add that maddie had panic attacks about how concerned she was this role was wrong and people would hate her for it. She was 14 at the time, an impressionable child. Sia, a fully grown adult, convinced her it was fine and sia was already acting as a creepy "mother figure" to her so young maddie trusted her. So just know that maddies involvement at the time was as a child coerced into doing something she was uncomfortable with. Kind of like on dance moms. Sia is problematic for SO many reasons.

Why didn’t Leonardo DiCaprio get any backlash when he played a child with austism/MR in Gilbert Grape? He doesn’t have a disability, and he definitely exaggerated his role too.. but that movie is iconic.

You have to keep in mind that Gilbert Grape came out a while ago when the autism community was far more ignored. Frankly, at that time it wasn't seen as a problem by a lot of people. In recent times, most people I've watched who are autistic have said they don't like that movie or portrayal. Catergory: OTHER has a video about autistic characters in media where I believe she speaks about Gilbert Grape and other characters.

Look, the "outburst" in that movie was not an outburst and in no way needed restraint--a bad practice in almost all cases. The movie is embarrassing and insulting in so many ways to the autistic community. Personally I have lived with family who have severe autism--and I know people don't like that term, but I have to use "severe" when meltdowns involve violence, choking people, putting one's head through a wall. So for me, the mannerisms were not an exaggeration--but they are still a mockery.

Whelp this was definitely added to the reasons I’m okay with not having a movie focused on a person ADHD as a focal point. The thought of someone doing shallow surface level research and acting out RSD and hyper focusing, makes me cringe by itself. Not knowing the difference between the attentive and inattentive versions, not understanding the companion ailments of anxiety and depression. Or the very basics like there’s a spectrum, that girls also have ADHD and that ADHD doesn’t mean you are easily distracted it’s that you have problems regulating and prioritizing what you focus on, which is way therapy, medication and structure are so important. For example I’m writing this in the morning before I took my medication, instead of getting ready for work, but I know to give myself 15-30 minutes of wiggle room in the morning just for times like this. So after acknowledging what I’ve been doing for the last 15 minutes I’ll end this here.

Hmm... I'm trying to educate myself here and I kind of understand the criticism towards the movie as it seems that it really feeds into stereotypes about autistic people. But what I don't quite understand is the general criticism about actors playing autistic people, because Sia's movie isn't the first time that this has happened. Kier Gilchrist for example played Sam in Atypical and Freddie Highmore plays Shaun Murphy in the Good Doctor - neither of these actors are on the spectrum. So I guess I'm trying to understand the criticism: Is it that Sia's movie is making it into a caricature and mocking autism in itself or is the criticism that non-autistic people are playing people on he spectrum? Anyone want to weigh in?

It's really not Maddie Zieglers fault, Sia even said in an interview that Maddie cryed before shooting because she didn't want to play the role. Also Sia has been basically obsessed with Maddie ever since she starred in the Chandelier music video, and admitted that she basically writes roles for Maddie.

Ok yes this is funny "haha" but!!! Special abilities to refer to autistic people is literally harmful to them!! Do you know how many times people thought I was super smart or had "special mind abilities" and how many of even my teachers were incredibly harsh to me because of it??? People always treat autistic people as if they have an easier time learning, when most of us have a HARDER time than neurotypicals. (especially if we also have ADHD, dyslexia, ect which is common too) Sidenote. Music? MUSIC?? Really?? Couldn't name her... Melody? Carol? No? Why? That's so stupid

As a person who works with neurodivergent/disabled people, it makes me really sad that she really patted herself on the back for "researching" the way that she did. Neurodivergent/disabled people are not stupid. They are very aware that interactions with them is often a new experience for people and sometimes that first experience is an uncomfortable one for one or both parties. But that awareness doesn't make it hurt less. My point is, like you said, she could've and should've spent significant time talking directly to neurodivergent/disabled people and parents to learn more about their experience. Not only would that have given her a more appropriate performance, it would've meant a lot to the community and to each individual she should've spoken to. Everyone wants to be heard. The disabled community generally has no issues talking about their experience, you just have to say hi and start a conversation.

The fact that she mentioned casting neuroatypical and trans people as doctors, singers etc instead of what is basically considered delinquents by the society is honestly so sickening because she says it as if it's a charity to their communities, as if she did them a favor just by casting them on roles other than addicts or sex workers. (Not even mentioning that trans actors have nothing to do with the issue and don't make up for her ableism. This was about better autism representation. Don't mention trans actors randomly just to show you're inclusive. Leave my people out of this.)

Sex workers and addicts aren't saving you from a covid death the last time I checked. Not only that, but there's precedent of casting minorities in unsavory/unseemly roles. This is one of the many reasons why minorities (namely Black Americans, practicing Muslims, Asians from all over, etc) have demanded fair representation over decades/centuries. Your commentary is usually intelligent, so it was jarring to hear that from you. Try not to be too woke...

im fairly certain thats not what he meant at all. i think he just didnt think in terms of representation. so while it is nice to see a trans person not playing a sex worker from the perspective of a trans person who wants some good rep for once, from a human viewpoint sia just sounded condescending towards sex workers and drug addicts as though they dont deserve to live as much as a doctor.

I don't agree on that part saying autistic characters should be played by autistic actors/ actresses since this is what acting is all about, what makes you a good actor is how well you can embrace them and emphasize with characters regardless of their sexuality, personality, mental or physical disabilities or special abilites etc. The wrong part of all about this situation is nearly 100% incorrect portrayal of autism and mental disabilities, poor or amateur acting and almost zero effort put in to portray and learn about those characters and hardship they go through due to their disabilities and the embarassing stereotypes just as they do with LGBTQ+ or severely depressd characters for most of the time. And the way people try to cover for their mistakes is straight up cringy. When you are someone that big who is leading thousands and educating many without realizing, you should know better. You had many around who could/did(?) warn you and, you are hella rich so you could go see some therapists, psychologists who had been succesfully dealing with the problems of autistic people and had a reputation on that branch, or you could even interview autistic people's themselves. I get it, you were too full of yourself and your artwork or were busy etc. that you forgot to pay attention to the actual message and characterization. Then grow-up and apologize atleast, jeez

I have family member with autism and this movie made them so mad and upset. Instead of uplifting a community, it just kicks them down. What's worse is that many neurotypical people, especially those don't have any experience with people with autism, are going to think this is inspiring for people with autism and that this is what it's actually to have autism. It's very damaging.

The thing is. Actors who arent neurodivergent can play neurodivergent characters. RJ Cyler did it in Power Rangers 2017 and he was praised by the community for his portrayal. He talked to autistic people. He respected us and he worked to make a character autistic people, especially autistic POC, could relate to.

I'm autistic and I am so tired of people expecting me to make up for my condition with some special superpower people can gawk at. I don't have any "special abilities" at all, in fact I'm more often that not really bad at whatever I try to do, even if I love it. Not to mention that sometimes it's not savant syndrome that makes other autistic folks excel at their special interests, but their sheer passion and dedication.

Well, Leonardo Dicaprio played an autistic character in a movie with Johnny Depp but the difference is that move wasn't offensive in my opinion. What Sia did is not okay the lack of accountability is off astronomical!!

The relationship between Maddie and Sia is bonkers and borderline grooming. Sia has a tattoo of MADDIE'S TEETH FFS. Said she wrote this part specifically for Maddie and that she couldn't do any project without Maddie 'cause it wouldn't be ART. This lady is crazy.

I really don't get the clinging to the culture of disabilities. If a disability can be "fixed" then why is that a bad thing? This is like the blind people that are advocating for science that can cure blindness to not be used because it will destroy "blind culture". Like if they can make the kid see, or make their brain function in a more optimal way...how is that a bad thing? We are on the cusp of a new generation of science that can get rid of nearly all neurological disabilities. If I had a kid that could love a "normal" life instead of being disabled I'm not going to pretend there is nothing wrong just because.

@nicholas ellis autism is a genetic/neurological disorder. The only cure is literal eugenics.

@I Got Cheese Whiz I'm not talking about autism speaks. I'm talking about technology and science that can make not only blind and autistic people fully functioning, but the rest of us too.

and if you're talking about autism speaks theres much more damage they have done then just trying to make a cure

@I Got Cheese Whiz Ok, yes if you want to nitpick. But like, if there is a cure, if there brains wiring can be reconnected, why would you not want to do it? It's not like it would be forced into anybody but I sure as hell would be pissed if my parents had the option and didn't take it. All for the "culture", like it's not as if every single autistic person is high functioning like what we get glimpses of in the media. People need to quit holding progress back just for the sake of it.

it makes it seem like autism is a disease and instead of making a "cure" we should just make it normalized

Maddie is a victim in this, she is basically being groomed by a creepy middle aged woman, I know D’angelo says nobody is trying to cancel Sia but.. Fuck Sia tbh.
